When attending a Very Nice presentation locally on Cohousing, our facilitator responded quite effectively when asked about work on common meals. Her questioner was a woman in a wheel chair who was told that all adults (who ate at common meals) normally worked on some meals (including preparation or cleanup). The way the answer was stated wonderfully expressed how participation in the work was an Inclusive Activity which allowed for differing abilities and interests to be used - in a way that built Community. While Some cohousing communities may "require cooking" I think that Strongly Encouraging or requiring Participation in the Meal Process seems more accepting. I am sorry to feel - dissonance - and hurt feelings - where meal issues may create disharmony, rather than helping build Community, though this is understandable. Thanks!
