My first message to the group, but I've been reading a while. We keep a minimum of staples in the kitchen. We have oil, salt, pepper and a few miscellaneous other things, and coffee supplies. Every now and then we ask diners to contribute $3 for staples, or $5 if they are coffee drinkers. Our dining system works such that the we sign up in groups of three, do the shopping, cooking, cleaning and pay for the meal, then eat all the rest of the meals in the cycle for free. We used to try to charge per meal, but the cooks kept going over budget and this way is much simpler. So we provide everything we need for the meal, and the staples we keep (other than coffee supplies) are for (I forgot to bring the oil!) emergencies.
