My main reason for writing was to point out the difficulty discussion such as this have when people write/talk in extreme language. One couldn't have guessed from your post that you attempted to keep your cats inside nor that you saw the position that cats should be indoors as other than extreme. Thank you for clarifying this is not your perspective.

I imagine that this discussion would be less problematic if it was done in person because the clarification would come sooner. In the medium of email, we must ask questions and clarify in the tedious, and more difficult medium of letters and written words.

Thank you for the clarification and for your concern for the environment.

P.S. We mostly have jays and crows here in part because the cats have eradicated or scared off most other species. When migrations occur new species come through and we see the evidence in new species of dead birds from cat kills.

I gather from your post that you wanted to know whether I feel guilty about
having cats. As a responsible pet owner I am concerned about the effect of
cats on birds and other wildlife in my area.

I live in a built up area where the main birds are sparrows, starlings and
blackbirds. All of them are considered pest species. My cats are mostly
indoors so the chance of them catching even one of these birds is minute.
They've not caught any yet. As someone mentioned earlier, the threat of
cats to native lizards is greater and a better reason to keep them inside.

Feral cats pose more of a risk to wildlife. However human destruction of
their natural habitats poses an even greater risk. A friend of mine who is
a wildlife biologist said that the main native birds that the feral cats get
anyway are the weak ones.
