One thing that helped here was to go talk to the neighborhood association. It started a good relationship that continues (they sometimes now meet in our common house). Another good idea is to present the other alternatives, which are often far less palatable. In our case it would have been a large apartment block. Most of the people opposed to coho were even more opposed to the apartments. This deflected a considerable amount of opposition, to the extent that the neighborhood association basically became a supporter.
