I actually agree with most of what you said, but my definition of community includes an acknowledgement of what individuals, families and groups contribute. I don't expect that there will be thousands of engraved "Thank-you" cards being sent around, and I hope no one gets pushed out of shape if a particular action on their part goes unnoticed, but I do think thank-you's and occasional acknowledgements help grease the wheels of a community. I've been in relationships where the partners were thanked for doing their agreed-to tasks, and in relationships where they weren't (you're just doing your job right?)
