I just want to point out that we have had VERY good experience in a number
of communities acquiring land with an existing building that can be used as
the common house before and during construction, if not also after move in.
These projects have included WindSong, in Vancouver, BC, Trillium Hollow in
Portland Oregon, Delaware Street Commons in Lawrence, Kansas, Bellingham
Cohousing in Bellingham WA, and soon hopefully, Mosaic Commons in Acton,
Mass.

The advantages, referred to by others in recent posts, significantly include
having a place to call home during the early phases of the project, when you
are trying to define your sense of self, and hopefully come to consensus on
the definition of your shared dreams. There is nothing quite like having a
common house programming and schematic design workshop in an existing
building on site which might someday be a part of your common house. Very
effective, and very good for building community.
