I've know several families who lived together in conventional suburbs while
their children were young and it worked very well. The issues quickly become
real estate issues -- where to find the right building for three families.
Two is much easier.

Everyone needs some space that is private, and you have to have family
meetings to sort out issues between the adults and the children. In Florida
houses tend to be built in the Spanish model with the bedrooms all on
different sides of the house -- this works well. One family has the master
bedroom wing, another the child or guest wing, and another the guest house.
The rest are common elements.

The people I've known have had two-year agreements that they renewed at
specified times as well as agreements about how the common property would be
disposed of if one family chose to move on.
