Here is a short peice for inclusion for the upcoming issue. Please advise if you need more info,or clarification. Thanks Nick Making Cohousing history in Ann Arbor, Michigan For the first time in the U. S. there will be three cohousing communities built side by side. In a beautiful setting, 8 minutes from downtown Ann Arbor, on a twenty-five acre parcel that features several ponds. The first community, Sunward (40 units) has been occupied for over four years. The second community, Great Oak (37 units), will, start construction in May or June, with occupancy anticipated late 2002 early 2003. There are several units still available in Great Oak. The third community, Honey Creek (42 units) is now in the formative stage with approximately 9 units committed. The CoHousing Company worked with both of these new communities to ensure that there would some degree of complimentarily between the two sights, with connecting paths, and garage structures from each community backing up to one another Each of the communities will have different floor plans, style of architecture, and site plans. Also, each of the communities will have their own Common House. Imagine the synergy that will be possible with three communities (totaling almost 120 units. The sharing of resources, utilizing an e-mail address that can link all three communities together, ride sharing, joint car ownership, children easily finding playmates of their own age, joint social activities, joint work projects, when someone is job hunting-having all households helping to find work. We can imagine political involvement and influence, and helping to shape public policy. One idea that is being given serious consideration is that of an indoor swimming pool. Under most circumstances, it would be unaffordable by a single cohousing community. However the possibility of three communities participating in the funding may make it possible. Since there are still units available, we invite you to consider joining, and create with us Both Honey Creek and Great Oak are being developed jointly with the Cohousing Development Company.
