At Sharingwood we are currently in the midst of a several hundred hour,
multi-thousand dollar patio project. (doesn't that description sound so
huge? it's really just making and installing some pavers)

What we decided to do with this is that EVERY community adult was expected
to either: 1. put in 6 hours of labor, or pay $120. The notion was that you
could swap hours with people, so if so and so didn't or couldn't work on the
project, they could barter with someone to do their hours in exchange for
some other service. Or pay the money, or combine it as they choose, with the
rate of $20 an hour being the agreed upon standard.

We are about a 1/4 of the way into this project, and it seems to be going
well and, as expected, there are some folks doing only the minimum hours,
and some doing way more. Assuming those doing more wish this, they can
receive payment for their hours. Most who are doing more and doing so
because they want to, and enjoy it, and expect no payment. Of course there
are also many jobs, some hard manual labor, some artistic, some gofer and
food and drink and support related.

Setting the minimum expectation, and allowing flexibility, seems to have
worked well for us, with no traces of resentment coming out that I can
detect.
