I am glad that the topic of affordable cohousing is being taken up on
the listserve. I would like to hear the story of how a group got a city
to extend "afforability loans" and how they are being used. Do you also
use rental units in this way? If so, who financed the units in the
first place? Is there any national money or should we be looking
locally or to the state?
Our city like to tax abate as an incentive to build in the city. They are currently abating for 15 years if you build new housing in the city which adds up to $30-40,000 saving over the next 15 years. That, however, doesn't help people who are struggling to come up with the down payment.
Is the affordability question tied to the diversity question in most cohousing communities? Has getting some outside financing to help make some units more affordable made it possible to drawn in more individuals or families of color?
Thanks for sharing information. We are a fledgling group in cincinnati who would like to be a part of the solutions in our city, not a part of the problems.
