After years of very loud dinners, we did extensive acoustics research. Cost effective/ vs. sound reduction vs. esthetics led us to the decision to carpet the dining area of the commonhouse. The noise reduction is noticeable, the esthetics are acceptable, and cost was reasonable. We choose to use 6 carpet sections that can be moved, replaced. This is an experiment and we will see how long the carpet lasts in terms of spills, smells, etc. Having it in sections makes cleaning and replacement fairly easy, at least in theory.
