Our common house design also has a lofty pitched roof, about 6m high, and given
that we were looking for eco-type materials we went for spaced boards. These
are varying widths, but roughly 2 to 4 inchs by 3/4 with a gap of about, 1/2 to
3/4 inch between, which reduces reverberation. It is not built yet but the
architect has used this method sucessfully in classrooms. Behind the boards are
some kind of paper or fabric liner I think, and polyester thermal / accoustic
insulation. The ceiling is also faceted which also helps, by reducing accoustic
geometricalness.

However we couldnt use this method in the kitchen ( which has a lower flat
ceiling) for cleaning reasons. The acoustics consultant recomended a glass
fibre tile, which is washable. Its kind of like a 3/4 inch thick sponge but
made from glass fibre. We have avoided other products containing glass fibre
due to concerns of airborn particles, and we are still on the look out for
something more eco.

The high roof was a result of a desire to give the common house a visual
presence, whilst on one level for mobility reasons. We arent sure how this will
work out, eg heat wise etc.
