I remember this being posted also. I think other communities have also 
posted that they work this way. In one, they purchase lots of basic 
goods that are used in the kitchen AND by residents. Their food 
purchases are part of a monthly fee.

As long as everyone who eats also cooks, and everyone serves roughly 
equivalent meals, it should work. The value of charging a fee is that 
not all meals have to "cost" the same. There can be a wide variation in 
cost depending on the ambitions of the cook(s).
