We have a similar system. All residents who expect to eat regularly are
required to be on a cooking team that is rostered for either Thurday
nights or Saturdays (currently we only have 2 common meals a week, as we
are only half built and making do with an old house as the rather cramped
temporary common house). The cooks pay for all their costs when they cook,
which is once a month, and also do all the clean up. The rest of the month
they get to eat free. Those not on a cooking roster (some members who
aren't resident yet, visitors, teenagers unless they do some dishes) pay
$3 per meal, which is spent on milk, tea, and other basics. Easy!
