At Jackson Place Cohousing, anyone who signs up for a meal, but can't eat it in the common house at the time it is served (at 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and either at 6:30 on a Saturday or Sunday evening, or at 10:30 on a weekday morning) can ask to have a late plate set aside. Then they can go into the common house and eat it there when they get home, or take it back to their own home and eat it there. Folks who want to work on preparing meals, but aren't available at usual meal times, prepare their part of the meal the evening before, or during the afternoon, or whatever works. Our common house is locked, except for when it is being used by large groups of folks, because we are in an urban environment. But, every resident has a key to the common house, so anyone who is an adult member of the community can go in any time. It is a city of 47,000 which serves as the bedroom community for about 6,000 well paid workers (and their families) employed at the Tar Sand mines & plants which are north of the city. The planner at the city wondered how common meals would work for rotating shift workers. Have other communities had shift workers that wished to participate according to their schedule? Are any common houses open and active 24/7? What about preparing extra meals that are then packaged and stored for reheating later?
