This is such a great thing to do. My brother once picked a flower for a
girlfriend out of a neighbor's garden. The flower was a potentially
prize-winning peony for which the owner quickly requested compensation in
yard work. In process he became a surrogate father for my brother, much to
the satisfaction of both. Many years later my brother was very proud of  his
own several acre landscaped yard.
