One way to approach this might be to look at what "protecting our investment" means. For a cohousing community, the investment usually includes some shared values, more than one might expect in a "random" neighborhood. Sustainable environmental choices? Concern for the neighbors?
Perhaps what people are really saying is that they are afraid of being restrictive or exclusive, or of being restricted or excluded. But as you say, you are feeling restricted and excluded by this position.
