Here at Cambridge Cohousing (MA), we have one 4 bedroom unit shared by 4 adult men, ages 30 to 50, with developmental disabilities. An adjoining one bedroom unit provides housing for a staff person. The program is administered by Specialized Housing, Inc., a local organization which administers several other community living programs in the area. Ours is the only one in a cohousing community. The 4 bedroom unit is actually a "condo within a condo," each resident owning his portion of the unit. Each resident goes to work every day and the staff person is here from late afternoon until early morning. The men are involved in some activities in the community, such as meals, playing pool in the rec room and also participate in some chores as they are able. The current staff person plans to get them more involved in the community. This "assisted-living" unit was developed primarily by one of our families who wanted their son to be able to live nearby while maintaining his independence. We have all learned and continue to learn from this opportunity.
