At Marsh Commons in Arcata Ca. we recently decided that each member of the community over twelve was expected to devote three hours a month to community efforts ranging from cleaning common house windows to organizing the library. Several of our high school and college age members have volunteered to baby sit during meetings and then to split up and put each child to bed, staying in that home until the parent comes home. This activity is easy for the young adults, actually providing a forum for them to get to know each other better, and a fairly painless way to do their three hours a month. Last month three of them ended up staying at the home of one of their charges playing a hot game of risk until quite late.
