RE: The discussion is on conflict sources (see above), as reflected in the expression "versus". - The message that I read that initiated this thread (for me) was broader: "Is there a convenient list of the top conflict issues in cohousing, and ways to head off the potentially damaging effects?" (T.R. Ruddick, Dayton Cohousing, 22 May) I agree that the listed issues are often triggers for conflict, and I'm interested in ways to minimise the damaging effects. One way is how we approach conflict, to discuss it or resolve it. Reframing the presenting issue creates a different context for the apparent conflict: Vegetarians vs carnivores, or how can we accommodate the diversity of eating preferences, what concerns do we share, and where do they diverge? ....etc. Reframimg the issue is helpful, and then using our imaginations to find effective ways of creating the future together, hopefully transforming the conflict. I think the presentation of polarised positions, as common as it is, is an unfortunate habit for which there are alternatives that need to be practised.
