This has been an interesting thread.

Back in Jan 2003 there was a similar thread in which the term
"like-minded" came up. It can be found by going to our subject search
tool at http://nzpp.virtualave.net/coho
and searching for:
cultural + racial + diversity
(Please ignore all the ads and you may have to hit reload to get results -
I hope to move / get this fixed one of these times... )

While I dont live in cohousing, we have a great neighborhood where we have
done some intentional organizing with cohousing-like goals. I remember at
the final session at the 1997 cohousing conference in Seattle, commenting
on how it had been great but I looked forward to getting back to my
neighborhood where it isn't so "white" (I dont recall my exact words...)
I usually summarize the neighborhood ans about 50-50 white/non white
depending on what boundaries you are looking at.

This morning when I took the trash and recycling out, my African-American
neighbor, Larry, said "Thank you" from down the street. I walked up to
chat and find out what he was thanking me for. (I'd closed his garage
door over the weekend when Inoticed it open and had left a voice mail
about it.) He told about his trip to North Dakota to take his second son
to college. I asked about his school; he's principal at an inner city
elementary school a couple neighborhoods away.

I'd miss having neighbors like Larry around.

On the other hand I am often impressed by how few Conservative Republican
I know personally (and they do exist in Minnesota; they currently dominate
our state government). So I guess my neighborhood could be described as
"like-minded" with respect to many political / philosophical issues
while being very racially diverse.

BTW the house next door to us (3 bedroom story and half ) which could be
very nice with some work is for sale. We'd love to have some
"like-minded" move in there.

By that term "like-minded" I mean people of any race, gender preference,
age etc who as Lynn Nadeau said " who have in common with me a value on
community, cooperation, environmental responsibility, open-mindedness,
peace and social justice, conscious child rearing, sustainable local
economy, organic food." (Tho I might quibble on the degree value put on
organic food...) For details, email me or see our out of date web page
"Homewood cohousing" via my link page - URL at end.

A couple of specific comments from the thread:

Right on, Elaine. I like having serious folks around who can laugh at
themselves too.

Matt, what specifically are you offended by in this (or something I did
not quote)? Maybe you have some TV addiction as I do?
