THANK YOU, Chris, for this post! You stated this so eloquently. While
our urban infill project was in the works, we'd occasionally get
potential members who would cycle through and leave because we weren't
"green" enough for them(no straw bales, not out in the country, not
enough solar, etc.). Our excellent insulation, shared hydronic heat, and
multifamily townhouses mean that our PG&E bills are TINY (mine's under
$20/month); our downtown location means that we can walk to the store
and the bank, cutting down on driving; and the soon-to-be-opened
businesses in our mixed-use building means some of our members will be
able to work on site. Our permaculture design, which includes a seasonal
pond, has already increased the neighborhood's amphibious population
(they are croaking loudly outside my window), Just 'cause it doesn't
look crunchy granola doesn't mean it isn't efficient and good for the
planet!
