In the NW every year there are a couple low key gatherings where experienced
and novice communitarians get together and talk about their experiences.
This are usually held in existing Communities, and in a few weeks, the
Songaia Cohousing Group will host one. This is a way that people can share
their experiences, often it done in a format which allows people to from
groups around their interests. In ten years of such gatherings, Group
process topics were always one of the largest groups. So people who live in
communities of all kinds share a common struggle to work and live together.
The model for these gatherings is totally simple, an invitation goes out to all the surrounding communities within a reasonable drive of the host community. There is a small fee, usually around $5 to cover paying for childcare. Childcare is provided by the host community, which is paid for by the money. There is a potluck meal. Lots of discussions and meetings happen.
This is totally reproducable in any part of the US, I encourage others to think about hosting such an event. It is not much work and you can get a lot out of it and make some wonderful new friends that you share a lot in common with.
