For all in Southern New England: An Evening about Ecological Communities Monday, April 3, 2006 5:00 - 7:00 pm at AS220, Providence Ecological Communities are human settlements that achieve a high standard of living with a low impact on the environment. They integrate green building design, renewable energy, on-site food production, community based businesses, and family friendly environments within a context of radically reduced environmental impact. They can be rural, urban or suburban in location, and have appeared throughout the world, including several in neighboring Massachusetts. They offer opportunities for conservation development, smart growth, senior and affordable housing and social action. Bradley Grove Hyson, Founder and Director of the Apeiron Institute for Environmental Living will share his findings from a year-long fellowship to travel and research 13 eco-villages in 4 countries and 6 U.S. states. This workshop will explore common themes of ecological human settlements and leave participants with a variety of ideas for their own communities. Brad will also share his vision for building Rhode Island's first Eco-Community for education and research purposes. In an era of uncertainly caused by sky-rocketing energy prices, suburban sprawl, dwindling open space, and housing shortages, eco-communities provide a key solution to building healthier, more secure places to live and raise our families. An Evening about Eco-Communities will take place at AS220 at 115 Empire Street in Downtown Providence from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The cost is free to all educators in the Hands-On Tools for Teaching Sustainability 2006 series and open to the general public with a suggested $10.00 donation. RSVPs are requested, please call or email Apeiron to reserve your space at 401-397-3430, or info [at] apeiron.org. See you there!
