Sharon -

I just want to clarify that I have been in the process of contacting each
community individually for the past two weeks, by direct email and
telephone. I decided to post a note to the listserv as well since the
contact information for a number of communities was not working properly. I
feel that I must try every channel available to make contact with a
community before I remove it from the study.

If you are interested I am happy to share my methodology with you. It was
not hastily developed. I always welcome ideas on how to improve it though.

You are hearing negativity about _this list_ being used as a survey
tool. People feel an obligation to respond but really don't believe the
surveys we have seen to date were worth the time.

A good survey should have some kind of controls on who answers. Just
because people subscribe to this list doesn't mean they are
representative of cohousers. When Graham Meltzer did his study we was
careful to follow good methodology.

And the challenge of surveys as research tools is to have really good
questions. I think if people see one, they will respond.
