Rob,
In our community, we have a "shared" pick-up truck. This
is very informal and someone put out on our listserve asking
for potential "sharers" and got 10-12. Our first "beater truck"
had about 12 "sharers". Everyone put in about $120 each and
then the maintenance costs were shared over the year. After
a year, the truck was not functional any more. So, another
member of our community had a truck he was selling, this one
in much better shape. He put a buying price on the truck and
a "group" of 8 folks chipped in to buy that. I think the way it
works is if you own a "share" you have access to the keys. If
you don't "own a share" you can ask to borrow the truck if
someone else isn't using it and pay a fee of $5. Each person
who drives it is responsible for filling it back up. I think the idea
behind it was to have some vehicle for hauling that many folks in
the community have access to so not everyone has to own a truck.
As a former truck owner, who now owns a Prius, I am appreciative
of the opportunity to have a vehicle for hauling when I need it!!

We haven't worked out the "shared" vehicle for folks to go to work in.
One of the main reasons we purchased our property where we did was
so that we were in the town limits and so many of us now drive less than
5 miles to work. So, many of us are on varied schedules and we have less
distance to drive than before we moved in.

  Thanks for asking!!

I would be interested to hear about cohousing groups which have people that
share ownership of cars and/or systems that groups have developed to share
rides.
