Eight of us at N Street bought a Honda Insight 2 seater hybrid. We have a website to make reservations - http://www.strategicoptions.org/carshare. 5 of us have our own cars and provide them for back up. So if someone has checked out the hybrid for a short trip and one can use it for a long trip, they trade and the longer trips have the priority. Use of your own car by the car coop reduces your bill to the coop accordingly. We handle insurance by having one of the members be the "owner" and pay the insurance. We had a member get in an accident. The insurance company paid the for the accident. The "owner" didn't want to risk having another accident by a non-"owner" of the car so he "sold" it to another member. We bill on a per hour and per mile basis. There are also opportunity times so that if the car isn't reserved, one can just use it and only pay the per mile and not the per hour expense.

I would be interested to hear about cohousing groups which have people that
share ownership of cars and/or systems that groups have developed to share
rides.
