Pleasant Hill Cohousing in the Bay ARea of California(http://www.phch.org/) is 
an example of urban infill. We are 32 condo type residences on a very tiny (2.8 
acre?) parcel at the end of a little tiny road. The reason we got the property 
in the first place is that it is bordered on all sides by a walking trail, 
primary school , big urban boulevard, and a drainage canal, so, it wasn't that 
attractive to your average developer. WE are compact, but the design (Chuck 
Durrett and Katie McCammant) makes us feel not too cramped.
