Thanks, Cher!
I thought the project described at the inhabitat site was very inspiring.

As someone keenly interested in all sorts of alternative building
materials, would you care to share the plans/links/info you've found
on building with containers? A container construction digest, if you
will? I've only seen one design, using both 20' and 40' containers,
but it was far too ultramodern to actually be useful for my family.
I'd love to see some designs using containers as columns
(stairwells?)!

Many thanks for all encouragement for containers. They are stacking
up in our big ports because they aren't worth shipping back to the
Pacific rim. The steel has a recycling value of several hundred
dollars, but given their bulkiness they're almost trash. I would be
doubly glad to help turn a disposal problem into cheap, sturdy housing.

I haven't seen any of the recent TV features, but I do have a file
collection of designs. For single containers I like the floorplans of
the best of the aluminum road trailers. For more than one container
I'm almost at a loss to decide arrangement -- I could build anything.

Lowe's (the home improvement chain) recently announced that they will
start offering a kit house called the Katrina Cottage in about 30
stores in the states around the Gulf of Mexico starting in November.
The small homes are based on a design by Marianne Cusato and will be
energy efficient, hurricane resistant, code compliant, and designed
for future expansion. Perfect for cohousing, in other words.

Shades of the Sears kit bungalows!
