We have been struggling with bike storage here in Pleasant Hill (CA) as well. 
We finally built a new bike shed in the back of our property where we've 
inadequately housed the kids bikes (not enough room, kids can't use hooks very 
well, etc) only to find the lock pried off the hinges this AM and several bikes 
stolen. The idea of racks where they can be locked is looking much more 
attractive.
