At Monterey Cohousing in Minneapolis, we lost 4-digit money (per
household) on a previous site before finding our successful site. When
we were successful against big odds on our current site, we counted it
as "the best education we could buy", to have gone through that and
learned what it takes to make a project work. However, we did not try to
roll the loss forward into the new site, as it was hard enough to make
the figures work as a stand-alone project, without coming into it with
debt.We would have needed a project three or four times as large as we
are, to have spread the loss over sufficient numbers of households, and
that wasn't going to happen on this piece of property that we love.
