What's important to me is that you write down what you agree to.I can imagine that what each group agrees to would be different: we have two neighborhoods built together, with pretty similar people, and yet very different rules.
But here are some common topics, I think (These are summaries, not the details.):
Work: whats the scoop? In our community right now the rule is essentially every household should contribute work. There is intentionally no definition of how much.
Noise: is there a time after which drums cannot be played? etc. Children: what can not-the-parent tell children about their behaviors?Building changes: We all own the outside of the buildings and are responsible for those repairs. What are you allowed to do without asking? Who do you ask if you have to ask?
Pets: are they allowed? Here are some that are important to our community because of our specific make-up.
Scented products: not in two of the three laundries. not in the common cleaning supplies.
Pesticides: only if you've tried the most organic, least lethal to other living things options first, and then you need to ask.
Common House furniture: only from pet-free homes unless completely wood or metal and well cleaned.

C-L:Thanks to everyone who recently commented on my post about rules. I hadadvocated "no rules, and no rules about having no rules."Now that that discussion has run its course, would anyone care to comment about the kinds of rules that are essential for intentional communities?WT _________________________________________________________________ Cohousing-L mailing list -- Unsubscribe, archives and other info at: http://www.cohousing.org/cohousing-L/
