An article in the NYTimes stated recently that you are better not rinsing the 
dishes, only scraping large particles, because the water needs the movement 
caused by running over a not smooth surface to clean. I'm not explaining that 
right but that's it.

Measurement — do a controlled study. For two weeks do it one way and for two  
weeks do it another way and see what works. All detergents use less phosphate 
than they used to so use current studies to determine what is actually 
happening. Hot water is necessary, too.
