Randa and CoHo:We used to have a cat that was a rare songbird specialist. He would leave their bodies on the back stoop. We loved him, but were too young and dim to convert him into an indoor cat or build an exterior enclosure for him. We still love all creatures, including cats and dogs, but we no longer keep them.
If anyone has any references to studies that support Randa's conclusions, I would appreciate a link. If is based on guesswork, I'm all in favor of that too, but there is a sliding-scale of actions, feedback loops, and time, not to mention the extreme variability of ecosystems that one must guess more cautiously about. 2/mi2 is one thing, but breeding happens, booms occur, and some booms can be fatal to other species before the boom gets lowered on overpopulation. Cultural factors can't be left out, such as people feeding colonies of feral cats out of the kindness of their hearts but to the detriment of indigenous/migratory species.
Culture and Nature don't mix very well. With coho'ers leadership, maybe the direction of cultural transformation can be changed from increasingly anti-Nature to decreasingly anti-Nature?
WT PS:How many are in favor of continuing outdoor cat policies? (I'm in favor of friendly presuasion.)

One or two cats per square mile would not be an issue, but many cats all hunting in the same area are a menace. If outdoor cats had to rely exclusively on hunting to eat, many would soon move on to less crowded territory or die of starvation.
