In case anyone is confused about why I think communications software designed for cohousing in particular and neighborhood associations in general here is my thinking: One of the things anthropologists look for when they want to define a community is communications. How is information shared and with whom? Open or controlled? Using a special language or using plain language? Only written when few people read? Or only spoken to a small circle? Only shared around beer and peanuts after midnight? That determines the existence of a community. And communities within communities. Inviting and nurturing diversity and individual choices, creates a complexity that relies on equally capable communications systems. If consensus/consent decision-making is to work, everyone has to have all the relevant information. It isn’t fair to ask someone to give you their best opinion but withhold crucial information. Radical transparency in things that involve community “business" is the best way to ensure that a community is inclusive. Having an integrated information system is the most accurate and effortless way to record and share information. How are communities coping with these issues?
