I have relatives in the Asheville area and from what I can gather, things are
pretty rough. I can’t get much info because mobile phone service is spotty
(which in and of itself hints at the state of things). In fact, the voicemail
that I got from a family member was abbreviated because a stranger was asking
to use her phone since she had service and they did not.

The NC DOT (https://www.ncdot.gov) says for now, "All roads in Western North
Carolina should be considered closed.”

So, I’m sure they could use help, but at this early stage it might be hard to
get it to them. Right now, I’m waiting for further news to see whether I will
have family coming here (to Pacifica Cohousing in Carrboro, NC) to escape the
mess in the mountains, or if it would be useful for me to go up there. I don’t
want to go up there only to become part of the problem!

Cheers
Philip
