Unless I missed something, this discussion has mostly focused on the final
home prices. Another thing that keeps cohousing unaffordable is that it
generally needs to be self financed at the beginning. Money is needed to
buy the land and develop it. There's a 12 acre piece of property in rural
Sonoma County, California that I am trying to get people together to buy.
It could potentially accommodate a cohousing community of 12-16 homes.
There are people in our group with amazing skills to offer, but no money to
invest. I want to find a way for them to live there. Without money though,
we can't buy it.

Anyone want to invest?

I lived in Frogsong, an urban cohousing community in Cotati, California for
about 10 years. I was one of the early members helping to get it built. I
moved out 10 years ago because I wanted to be in the country. I miss living
in community though. FrogSong does have 5 homes that were deed restricted
to be affordable.
