We obtained replacement fabric slings from the following company and followed 
their instructions for repairing the chairs. There are other companies who sell 
the slings as well.

The first time we replaced the slings, another resident and I did the job, but 
it was not easy! The hard part was having the strength to re-install the 
spreader bars.

It took quite a while for the slings themselves to deteriorate. The bigger 
problem was that some of the slings popped out of the sling rail, perhaps 
because of our less-than-professional installation job and perhaps because the 
old chairs may have warped a bit after years outdoors.

The second time, a few years ago, we hired a handyman to do the job. I was not 
involved except to suggest a source for the replacement slings. This time, some 
of the slings started popping out of the sling rails around the curve (where 
the back merges into the seat) within a year. Several are like that now, but 
people still sit in them.

The chairs are functional, and we have other donated patio chairs we can use 
when we have large gatherings outside. As a result, we haven’t brought up a 
proposal to try to replace the slings again or start over with new furniture.
