How many cohousing groups are either growing significant food or plan to? I remember Winslow had edible landscape when I visited in '93 and Nyland has a big solar greenhouse. IMHO, part of the path to sustainability should deal with local food production. It costs us (and the planet) so much when we transport it from all over the world and package it so lavishly. A community here in Colorado, Sunrise Ranch, (not cohousing) produces about 60% of their food in an organic farm on part of their 100+ acres. I realize that most coho sites wouldn't have room for extensive growing, yet a surprising amount of stuff could be grown in a little space using permaculture techniques. I also realize many cohousers don't have the time to be part-time farmers! Another option: if you don't have time/space to grow your own, how many have considered joining a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm where you pay in advance for a share of a year's produce?
