Diane,You probably already know our experience. We priced all sorts of materials at Pioneer Valley. At htat time, Hardi Plank was significantly LESS than cedar. The labor tends to run the same or a little more because it is harder to cut, heavier to handle, and harder to nail, but most contractors after they've used it once are comfortable with it.
Hardi Plank comes with a 50 year warranty. You can also get a 15 year paint warranty if you have it pre-finished, and that is because it is so stable that it supposedly holds paint longer than solid wood. Although cement is not a particularly "green" component in the Hardi-Plank, overall I think it is a "greener" product than cedar. Cedar however can be left natural (unpainted) which can safe some money initially and on maintenance, but may not be a suitable aesthetic.
Mary will probably voice the same opinion this weekend. Good luck with your tough decisions.

Hi Peg et al!The comment about the HardeePlank caught my eye because that's what we're planning to use. Our contractor claims we can save 32-45K by using 3/4 red cedar siding. Has anyone else who's used HardeePlank found it to be cheaper than cedar? What are some of the maintenance trade-offs?Thanks for any advice you can give! --Diane Simpson JP COHOUSING 617-524-6614 P.O.
