Hello-I'm Chris Koehn, formerly of Wisconisin, currently traveling North America with my wife and two young sons. I'm a timber framer with 16 years experience in all aspects of the timber frame building business; my wife is a home designer. We are living in our Airstream trailer, pursuing the traditional "journeyman" model, visiting timber framing shops around the continent. Ruth and I have been keenly interested in co-housing for quite a while. One of the goals of our journey is to learn more about how it works and feels. We hope to conclude our journey in a year or so. Wherever we settle, we'd very much like to build our own home. I've been lurking on this list for a while, in addition to studying the movement since the mid-90's. It seems that there is a trend away from owner-building. Is this a correct perception? If so, why? Are there communities that still allow owner-building? What are the pitfalls?
Thanks for the list and the advice! Chris Currently in central PA, headed for Philly, then to VA... <www.koehnjourney.blogspot.com> <www.timberguides.com>
