Hi Joanie,

I’m so sorry to hear this, and didn’t realize your group had lost its
land four years ago. If by cooperative housing you mean a shared group
household (rather than literally a housing co-op) I highly recommend the book,
The Sharing Solution: How to Save Money, Simplify Your Life & Build Community
by Janelle Orsi, a lawyer in California who specializes in helping people form
organizations involving sharing houses, apartments, cars, and so on. She’s
licensed to practice in California but can probably serve as a consultant in
general (as compared to being licensed in NM to draw up documents) and perhaps
can recommend a lawyer in NM who is familiar with shared housing.

        More books for sharing housing:
My House Our House: Living Far Better for Far Less in a Cooperative
Household, by Karen M. Bush and Louise S. Machinist (I’ve read this one too:
it’s good)
How to Start a Golden Girls Home, Bonnie Moore
Sharing Housing: A Guidebook for Finding and Keeping Good Housemates,
Annamarie Pluhar
House Mates: A Guide to Cooperative Shared Housing, Lori Stephens

But if you literally mean “cooperative housing” — a specific legal
entity in which a group of people co-own housing or land (legal in all states),
involving people owning shares and having separate occupancy agreements, I
suggest asking the National Cooperative Housing Association in Washington DC to
recommend lawyers who specialize in co-ops in New Mexico. http://coophousing.org
        Good luck, Joanie!
        Diana
