We had gravel pathways for the first 15 years. They contributed a steady
supply of silicate dust in our homes, even a shoes-off home. Then we
replaced them with cement pathways 6 years ago. We love our pathways now.
No maintenance required. The main pathways are 4' wide and the subsidiary
pathways are 3' wide. They have breaks every 12 to 20 feet where there is
a 9" gap in the concrete filled with sand and bricks. These breaks are
attractive and allow for drainage in low spots. We keep vehicles on the
outside so the pathways are just for pedestrians. The units furthest from
fire-truck access were required to have sprinklers.
