At Monterey Cohousing (Minneapolis, MN) our common house is also the home of 8 families in coop-financed apartments. The whole building is no smoking, no illegal drugs. I think the same applies to all common space (the drugs) - I can't remember about outside smoking - hasn't been an issue, and I don' want to go way back to look it up. We have very few members who use alcohol, but responsible use in common house is ok - there was just a private party with champagne served. The non use is often for allergy or medication conflict reasons - people who get headaches from beer or wine, etc, and we just don't seem to have a lot of drinkers. Again, I don't remember the details of the policy, it was worked out so long ago and has been little discussed I suspect it was something about not disturbing others. In home use is similar to Sharingwood, except that we have folks living in the Common House which creates opportunities for impacts others might not have. Alcohol is frequently consumed in the commonhouse without incident and of course peoples homes are there own domain to do whatever they want.
