Well companionship may be one reason. The folks at PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) would agree with you that animals are not ours to own. However, many of them have companion nonhuman animals who share their lives. My cats, Larry&Simon, may not be very practical but they are very good at being cats. While I enjoy the kids in the neighborhood, I enjoy the quiet solitude I have with the cats. There have been many times when I did not feel motivated to leave the house but I did so because the cats needed food, litter, ... So, do animals need to have a job (i.e. guide dogs and other assist animals) in order to exists?
