Our group has just initiated the design process and we are addressing the challenge of hiring professionals. Some members of our committee, notably two landscape architects, are of the opinion that it is not absolutely necessary to hire experienced cohousing designers, that a good architectural group who has worked with co-ops for example would be perfectly adequate. On the other hand there are few of us who feel that it is imperative that the person /persons we hire has a good understanding of cohousing design principles (commonhouse location, parking, house placement etc) as well as an ability to interpret our group's unique needs and values. A big challenge I am sure. We would appreciate any pearls of wisdom on this subject.
