In my opinion, the place where I've seen non-cohousing experienced
architects really miss the boat is with the commonhouse design. The good
news is, usually it really doesn't matter in the end. If you look at 4-5
built examples, you can pretty much get a good product, and just about any
architect worth their salt will do this. Certainly you will have group
members who will.

I agree with Rob.

For our projects, we are now asking that prospective architects provide a post occupancy evaluation of at least one existing common house, and that they present that evaluation in detail to the community, in person, as a part of their credentials for consideration.  This should apply to seemingly experienced cohousing architects, as well.  Most architects have never actually done a real post occupancy evaluation.  Their information about past projects tends to be anecdotal, and they of course hear what they want to hear, and try to forget the rest.

The other weak place in the cohousing design process is in private unit design.  Townhouses and for that matter all multi-family housing design is VERY different from residential design.  Many architects not inexperienced in multi-family can really do you a disservice.

If you are considering underground parking, which is becoming more common in cohousing, seriously consider the commercial and concrete construction experience of your architect.

Take care.
