The other difficulty with ride sharing is variable schedules. Organization is important but the difficulty is putting oneself at the mercy of the schedules (late, fast, changing, erratic) of others. To do this occasionally is workable. To do it all the time is very difficult. I once commuted from a small town in upstate New York into the city. The "guys on the bus" were always trying to figure out schemes to buy a van and drive themselves in and out of the city. While it would have been less expensive, more pleasant, and faster to do it themselves, they would also have had to make commitments to the same schedule no matter what. In the end they chose the freedom to come and go without having to consult 6 other people every time you got off work early or took a day off or decided to stay in the city for dinner.
