Gee, I feel so old-fashioned. The three of us don't have a microwave. We
don't even have a mechanical dishwasher (though we wouldn't object to
having one, actually). We bake regularly - cookies, cakes, pies, bread,
roasted vegetables, baked fish, casseroles (and strawberry shortcake
season is almost upon us!) ... so we couldn't survive without an oven.
It's not unusual for us to have all four burners on the stove in use, and
be wishing for more.
Sounds like this is a good case for including a range of choices in unit
programming and design!!
One idea we've tossed around in brainstorming sessions is developing a
unit floor plan that includes some adaptable area, such as a wall that can
be located either <- that way or -> this way, or an area that might or
might not be another room. We'd aim to make the kitchen as usable as
possible for two very active cooks, while our friends who are
professional musicians would probably try to use the space as part of
their music room. Since we're still at the brainstorming stage, it's
easy to imagine such solutions; we'll find out later how impractical such
ideas really are. :-)
But I'd agree with earlier postings in this thread: the kitchen is most
definitely an area where "one size fits all" doesn't cut it. Nor, in our
case, does "but you can use the common house!" I think you need to take a
serious look at how you really function in your home and in your kitchen,
preferably with the help of a good design professional, and include that
information in the planning for unit designs. And make it possible to
include as wide a range of options as you can possibly afford!
