We do not allow unsupervised small children in the commonhouse. We have two
kids' rooms, the lower one is for kids up to 10, and they have to have an
adult who is willing to be with them in the CH. Bigger kids can be upstairs
alone in The Room Formerly Known As The Teen Room, if their parents decide
it's kosher. My son isn't yet ready for that responsibility, 'though he's
11, so it depends on the child. Older teens, too, can be a problem.
Hormones. Again, it's up to the parents to worry about that.

We do lock the commonhouse at all times, except when there's an event or
dinner going on. We have two entrances, one has self-locking doors, and the
other one has three French doors, one of which is self-locking, so that
people don't have to stop and lock the doors. We also had a problem with
people not remembering to lock up. We do live in the city, and stuff has and
will walk away if not locked up. YMMV.

I don't see how you could keep kids out if you didn't lock it, but that, I
guess, is a problem for rural groups to deal with!
